CROWDFUNDING SUCCESS
In 2014, Colorado voters were faced with a third personhood amendment on the ballot-part of a series of attempts to ban abortion in Colorado. The measure had been defeated soundly twice before, but the messaging and polling on the current measure showed we had a closer race on our hands this time. I stepped up to help the No on 67 campaign by creating a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for digital ads to help defeat Amendment 67. At launch, the crowdfunding campaign struggled for the first few days. The goal was to have it reach out into the national feminist blogosphere and gain attention there. It wasn't working.
So I revised my strategy on the fly and decided I would target a large feminist subreddit on Reddit /r/twoxchromosomes. The problem was, the rules stated posts to crowdfunding campaigns weren't allowed. So, I wrote a blog post, put it up on Huffington Post and posted that to the subreddit. Within a few hours the Reddit post was on the front page of Reddit and the blog post went viral (over 120,000 shares and nearly 500,000 likes on Facebook alone.) This raised nearly $30,000 from over 800 supporters across the country and in six others countries around the world. Colorado's Amendment 67 was on the national radar and people were finally talking about it. I was able to take the money raised and run Google ads that educated voters about the problems of Amendment 67. It lost by a healthy margin.
DIGITAL STRATEGY EXPERIENCE
#COLEG HASHTAG SUCCESS
In 2011, Colorado was behind in using Twitter to have important, on-going conversations. I set out to change that. To teach people in Colorado the value of Twitter and how to use it, I created the #coleg hashtag for use with the Colorado legislature. I then set out to train everyone I could on Twitter so the conversations in #coleg about the legislative session could be in real time and useful to everyone. After hundreds of trainings with everyone from the media, to legislators, to advocates, to everyday people, the #coleg hashtag grew to be one of the most used and important hashtags in Colorado. To this day, it is recognized as the go to place for information and news about Colorado's state legislature and legislative session.
ANGIE ZAPATA TRIAL SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS
In 2009, Colorado saw the murder trial of transgender teen Angie Zapata, held in a courtroom in the small town of Greeley. This historic trial would be the first time a crime against a transgender person was tried and convicted as a hate crime.
During this trial, I partnered with GLAAD and the Gill Foundation to lead the the social media team for the trial. The goal was to bring as much national awareness and attention to crimes against transgender people as possible. We succeeded by bringing a transgender blogger in to cover the trial alongside the New York Times and the local news stations. We live-tweeted the trial and our hashtag became a featured news source for people following the trial around the world. A video I made personalized Angie and her family and our live coverage of the verdict was viewed across the country. At the time, transgender issues were barely on the national media's radar. We helped put them there.
THE SOCIAL MEDIA BUCKET LIST
Everyone who works in digital media has a bucket list-a list of goals they work hard to reach with every campaign and piece of content. I'm pretty happy with the bucket list I've achieved so far, although there is always more to do.

ABOUT ME
Born and raised in rural West Virginia, I grew up on good, old-fashioned storytelling. It's in my blood to this day. I also have a passion for leaving the world a better place than I found it. Put this together with a creative brain that craves innovation and loves to laugh and insert it into the digital age and you have a person who loves waking up every day to tell the stories that inspire people to action.
